The Law Library of the Alaska Court System (ACS) seeks a motivated and organized Public Services Librarian in Anchorage. The successful applicant will provide legal research and general reference assistance and will develop training materials to assist library users of resources in print and electronically.
This position oversees reference services and supervises reference positions in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau. The following are regular duties:
REFERENCE
- Provide legal research assistance and respond to reference questions received from the judiciary and other court personnel, attorneys, paralegals, pro se litigants, incarcerated individuals, and members of the public; duties require thorough knowledge of the law and the library's print and electronic collection, the ability to think creatively to select appropriate resources, and the ability to locate resources elsewhere.
PATRON INSTRUCTION/TRAINING
- Develop and update library handouts, including educational materials and research guides; provide current awareness services to court staff;
- Develop training for on-demand delivery as appropriate; develop and present classes on legal research, use of specific databases, and other topics to court staff, attorneys, and others;
- Research, modify, and implement industry changes in training and reference models; conduct library tours.
CIRCULATION
- Oversee circulation and interlibrary loan services; recommend policy, maintain patron circulation records, and assist reference staff with the use of circulation and interlibrary loan systems;
- Coordinate with the Technical Services Librarian on circulation issues in the integrated library system.
SUPERVISION / MANAGEMENT
- Hire, train, and supervise reference desk assistants and branch staff; create reference desk schedule;
- Provide staff training on new resources, patron services, and interlibrary loan.
COMPUTER AND WEBSITE MAINTENANCE / OTHER DUTIES
- Work with library and IS staff to configure and maintain public access computers in Anchorage and all library branches statewide;
- Manage passwords for individual accounts court staff statewide;
- Assist the court webmaster with content review, maintenance, and renovation of law library and court system website;
- Participate in a full range of professional duties relating to the organization and administration of the Alaska State Court Law Library including professional meetings and workshops, staff meetings, employee selection, compilation of statistics, preparation and enforcement of library policies, and current awareness of developments in law librarianship.
